Ben Shahn: Artist With a Conscience

This small but striking exhibit of twenty-three colored prints by Ben Shahn reflects the power and irony of the work of this important 20th century artist.

Shahn, who began his career as a lithographer in the early 1900's is well known for his use of stark lines and commanding contrasts. While he has often been compared to Paul Klee, Shahn's meticulous attention to detail and his use of art as a social commentary give his work a personality that is all his own.

The colorful prints in this striking exhibit include works such as "...to the sea itself, to seas." "...to nights of travel that rushed long on high and flew with all the starry," and "... and know the gestures unto which the little flowers open in the morning." The lyric titles aptly describe the haunting beauty and impact of the works created by this remarkable artist. Shahn reflects the power and irony of the work of this important 20th century artist
